Why Do Agencies Reject Payments

Why do agencies reject payments?

A rejected payment means the agency — not AllPaid — declined it. AllPaid processes your payment, but the agency you're paying decides whether to accept or reject it. Because the agency makes that decision, they're the only one who knows the specific reason, so contacting them directly is the fastest way to resolve it.

Common reasons a payment may be rejected

Every agency sets its own rules for what it will accept, so reasons vary. Some of the more common ones include:

  • The payment was a partial payment. Some agencies do not accept partial payments and may reject a payment that doesn't cover the full amount owed.

  • The payment went to the wrong agency or Pay Location Code. If a payment is submitted to the wrong location, the agency may reject it. See I Paid the Wrong Agency.

  • The payment was submitted in error. If it's determined that a payment shouldn't have been made, the agency can reject it.

  • An agency-specific reason. Agencies may reject payments for other reasons specific to their own process or requirements.

What happens to my money if my payment is rejected?

When an agency rejects a payment, AllPaid automatically issues a credit to you for the original payment amount. No action is needed from you for this credit to be processed.

The service fee is non-refundable

The service fee is not included in the credit, even when the agency rejects your payment. See Understanding the AllPaid Service Fee for details.

How to find out why — and what to do next

Contact the agency where you made the payment. They can tell you the specific reason for the rejection and what to do next — for example, paying the full amount owed or submitting to the correct location.

You can also check your payment status anytime using the look-up tool. See Look Up Your Payment Status.
